Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. (1923­) was the first American in space (May 
5, 1961). He commanded the Apollo XIV Lunar Landing Mission in 1971 and 
became the fifth man to walk on the moon. He also has the distinction 
of being the first man to hit a golf ball on the moon.
